Captain Morgan Leads Red to Second Straight Victory 13-11
September 30, 2018
Red won both days 6 1/2 to 5 1/2, as Paul Morgan played dominating golf. While there were many close matches, including a record eleven that went to 18, Morgan pasted two opponents and finished his other win on 16. Jimmy Gurney also had an outstanding cup, going 2-0-1 and getting a key half point to clinch the cup on Sunday. Bill Sedwick, likely playing in his last Cup, kept his undefeated Sunday record.
The teams were tied after the opening morning, and Red once again won the alternate shot 3 1/2 to 2 1/2
Blue had plenty of chances on Sunday, as many key matches went to 18, but Red was able to hang on to key points in the late matches.
Four Ball
Match 1
Four 'prove you're a man' shots for Brad by the 12th hole. Tied through 11, Ron Sr. pars four of the last six holes, getting strokes on all, to make the difference.
Match 2
Billy hits long par putt on #2 to put Blue up 2. They halved four straight holes. Bogey best ball was good enough for Blue to keep its lead the rest of the way.
Match 3
Blue had a four hole lead with four to play. Schubert had a 41 on his ball on the front nine, while no one else could get it going. Inspired when his bogey won 15, Gordon then birdied 16 and 17, a chip in on 17. But his par on 18 was not good enough, as Schubert also made par to close out the match 1up.
Match 4
Paul Morgan and Dennis Hackett got off to a great start, if a little ugly. Hackett’s double on the third won the hole, and his bogey on the fourth won the hole. By the 7th, Red was up five. Best played then next nine holes in four over, but it wasn’t enough, and Red finished on 16 with a par.
Match 5
Blue never trailed, but never led by more than two. Blue fought to a two hole lead on the front, but at 10, Ted LeFere played the wrong ball and Blue’s lead was only one. Spadafore birdied the 12th to even the match. LeFere parred 13 to win, but Red evened them match at 16 when George went 5/4. At the 18th, LeFere made a rare birdie to pull the match out for Blue 1 up.
Match 6
It was a tight match all the way, no one ever led by more than two, and both teams had leads on the back nine. Jim Gurney made birdie at the 4th to give Red a one up lead, but Peggs’ par at five re-tied the match. Haas and Peggs both parred the tough 8th, but Haas’s stroke gave Red the lead again. Red led by two after eleven, but Bill Sedwick got hot. His bogeys with strokes on the two par fives were good enough to bring the match to even, and his par at the 15th gave Blue the lead. But Gurney parred 16 for a win, and Haas rolled in a 20 foot birdie putt on 17 to give Red the lead for good. Matching bogeys on 18 gave Red the 1 up win.
Foursomes
Match 7
Olenik came out blasting hip hop. Olenik and Gurney played the first five holes in even par to get out to a 5 up lead, then won the 6th with a double bogey. George and George made a mini-run to get four holes back, and went to the 12th tee down two. But Red won the next three to win five and four.
Match 8
Hackett and Dirlain had a strong start, and led by three after six, but then struggled off the tee. They lost four straight holes with double or worse from nine through twelve. Then the match became very even for most of the back. Red made birdie to even things up at 16. Best and Juday made a great birdie at 17 to take the lead back, and the teams exchanged triple bogeys at the 18th, giving Blue the win.
Match 9
Matt Haas and RG Sr. played the first six holes in one over to grab a three hole lead, and by the 12th, they had extended it to four. But Sedwick and Schubert caught fire and played 13 through 17 in one under par. They came to eighteen trailing only by one. At eighteen, their bogey was good enough to even the match, and it ended in a half.
Match 10
The front nine was tight with a lot of halved holes. Gordon and George continued their great records as a team, moving their record to 4-0. Red’s pars at six and eight gave them a two hole lead. The back was all Red as they turned a two hole lead into a pasting 6 & 5 over Bass and Wilker.
Match 11
The first hole Peggs and Williams won was the eleventh, with a par. Morgan and DeAngelis dominated, and pasted 6 and 5.
Match 12
First lost scorecard in 25 years of the Concord Cup. Walters and LeFere beat Spadafore and Grace. This whole thing is shrouded in mystery. Blue player, speaking on the condition of anonymity, believes actual score was 7-5, but does not want to be quoted. When asked about potentially losing the scorecard on purpose, Red Player Spadafore had this to say: "I can neither confirm nor deny any culpability related to this issue. All future inquiries should be directed to my counsel."
Pairs
Match 13
Both Schubert and Haas had leads on the front nine. Haas led by two after birdieing the fifth hole. Schubert then won three straight as Haas played the next three four over. The match was even through twelve, when Haas won two straight holes with par. His par at 17 gave him the match 3&1.
Match 14
This was a very rare match in that both players had three hole leads, and both lost those leads. Remmo won five, six and seven as DH made doubles on all three. But Remmo closed with two 7s and by the tenth, DH’s par evened the match. DH had righted the ship, and played twelve through fourteen in one over to gain a three hole lead. But the momentum swung again, as Remmo won fifteen with a par, sixteen with a bogey, and eighteen with a bogey to even the match.
Match 15
Ugly golf. Chris took a six hole lead through seven while playing 13 over par. The match evened out after that, but too late for Frank and Wilker won 4&3.
Match 16
The match was fairly even on the front. Bill birdied the fourth to take a one hole lead, which he extended to two with par at the fifth. But Dirlain’s bogey at six and double at eight evened the match. Hole 12 lived up to its name with an early concession by Tom Dirlain, giving George a two hole lead. As Dirlain struggled, Bill played the next three holes in even par to close out the match 5&3.
Match 17
Bill Sedwick has still never lost a singles match. This was a rematch of the match two years ago, which was tied. This match was very close for the first eleven hole, never apart by more than a hole. Sedwick won the first, George won the fourth, Sedwick won the seventh, and the rest were halved. At 12, as both players teed off at the garden spot, Sedwick made five to go up two. WIth a bogey at 15, he extended his lead to three, and hung on to win 2 and 1.
Match 18
Bass and Lou. Halved. Both players led at different points of this match. Each of the first twelve holes was lost with a double bogey. DeAngelis made a nice run with par-par-double to win three straight from nine to eleven, but gave back two holes with a double at twelve and a bogey at 13. Bass parred the 17th to even the match, and both players bogeyed 18 to halve the match.
Match 19
Paul Morgan pummeled Ron George 7&5, playing the twelve holes three over par. George had nothing.
Match 20
Dom jumped out to an early three hole lead as Brad played the first four holes in nine over par. But Juday biridied the fifth with three solid shots, and made pars at six and seven to even the match. His eight at the 8th stopped the momentum, but he won the ninth when Spadafore’s tee shot found the underside of the creek bridge. Juday stated the back like he started the front, and was three down after twelve. He conceded to Dom on the tee of 15 when Spadafore put his tee shot on the green.
Match 21
Jamie gave Bob three strokes. Bob comes in 2-0. Jamie gets off to strong start and leads by 4 after six, playing only four over par, and even winning while giving up a stroke on the 4th. But Bob turns it around with bogeys at the seventh, eighth, and tenth. His double at the 11th ties the match, and his bogey at the 12th gives him the lead. He continued his run with bogey wins at 13 and 14, and now led by three. Bob made his second par of the day at the treacherous 18th to close out the match 2 up.
Match 22
Jimmy opened up two hole lead with a bogey at the fourth. But Best fought back with winning bogeys at the fifth and seventh. Both players made par at the tough eighth, Best hit a pitch to two inches for his par and Jimmy sunk a ten foot breaker to halve the hole. Best’s par evened the match after nine. Both players were very strong on the back, and the match was close throughout. Best won the 15th and 16th with pars, and was up two with two to play. But Jimmy closed with a chip in par at 17, and then a great par at 18 with everyone watching, as he clinched the cup for Red.
Match 23
Vince closed out a 3-0 week by manhandling Peggs. He actually trailed by two after the third hole, when Peggs got out to a 4-2-4 start. Both players birdied number two. Olenik shot 37 on the front, and turned with a three hole lead. He closed out the match on 14.
Match 24
Lefere and Gordon played a tight match. Both players had leads but never by more than one. Lefere and Gordon played a tight match. Both players had leads but never by more than one. They matched each other's scores on 15 through 17. After a perfect drive off the demanding 18 tee, Gordon then waited and watched his teammate secure the Cup on the green ahead. He then calmly hit his approach to 15 feet to win the match 1 up and put the exclamation point on the Red Team victory.
