1. All USGA Rules of Golf shall apply.
2. Four-ball Matches
a. Assignment.
Prior to the matches, the captains will agree on a method for matching
teams, and determine the assignments.
b. Format
On a given hole, the team which has the player with the lowest
total will win the hole. If at least on member from each team
matches the lowest score, the hole will be halved. A match is won
by the side which is leading by a number of holes greater than the
number of holes remaining to be played.
c. Handicap
Official event handicaps will be used according to the rules of golf.
The person with the lowest handicap will not receive strokes. The other
players in the group will subtract the low handicap from theirs to determine the
number of holes for which they get strokes. See
USGA Handicap Rule 9-3
d. Point Value
Each twosome that wins a match will yield one point for their
team. If a match is halved, a half point will be given to each
team.
e. Order of Play
Balls belonging to the same side may be played in the order the
side considers best.
f. Additional Rules
All rules of golf apply, including
Rule 30, regarding four-ball
match play.
3. Foursome Matches
a. Assignment
Prior to the matches, the captains will agree on a method for matching
teams, and determine the assignments.
b. Format
Two play against two, and each side plays one ball. Players shall
play alternately from teeing grounds and alternately during play of
each hole. A hole is won by the side with the lowest score. A
match is won by the side which is leading by a number of holes
greater than the number of holes remaining to be played.
c. Handicap
The event handicaps for each side are added.
The differences of the totals is calculated, divided by two,
and rounded down. (Example: Team 1 has a 6
and 9, Team has a 7 and 14. (7+15) - (6+9) = 7;
7 /2 = 3.5, rounded to 3. Team 1 gives 3
strokes.)
See USGA
Handicap Rule 9-3
d. Point Value
Each twosome that wins a match will yield one point for their
team. If a match is halved, a half point will be given to each
team.
e. Order If a player plays when his partner should have played, his side
shall lose the hole.
f. Additional Rules All rules of golf apply, including
Rule 29, regarding foursome
match play.
4. Pairs
a. Assignment
Captains shall work out between them a method for assigning the
necessary matches.
b. Format
Rules of Match Play apply. A match is won when a player is
leading by a number of holes greater than the number of holes
remaining to be played.
c. Point Value
Each player that wins a match will yield one point for his team. .
d. Handicap
Players shall use their event handicaps. Strokes given are
based on the difference between the event handicap. (For example, a 13
playing a 17 will give four strokes). See
USGA Handicap Rule 9-3
5. Event Handicap Rules
a. Players must report a USGA index, or a
reasonable substitute to the committee. This will be
used during the event. The committee may adjust for
"tournament" scores based on previous cup play.
b. Players must turn in an accurate index. If they do
not have one, they may turn in a list of recent scores.
If they do neither, the committee will estimate their
handicap based on previous Concord Cup play and feedback
from people that play with them. Some consulting with
captains will be done. The committee will then
apply a 20% deduction penalty to this handicap. (This
is consistent with the USGA's recommended "penalty score"
approach. In addition, players must conform to the
USGA's ESC rule when posting scores. IF they do not, a
10% adjustment will be applied.
6. Matchup Selection
a. Prior to the Foursomes and Fourball, the
captain of the team that does not hold the cup has the
option of whether he wants to throw out the first team in
either the Fourball or Foursomes. The cup-holder will go go
first in the other format.
b. Priort to the Pairs session, the team
that does not hold the cup will again be given option
whether to choose first, or defer.
c. Choices will be made in sequential order. The first
captain will state a team. The second captain will state
the team he wants to put up against them. Then the second
captain must state a team. (Passing is not allowed.)
d. The order of play will follow the sequence exactly. So
the first team thrown out will be playing first. Captains
may mutually agree to change the order of play, but should
feel no pressure to do so.
7. Scoring
Players should mark the scores of both
players on the scorecard, even during the Fourball
competition. In the event a player does not finish a
hole, the best guess as to what they would have scored
should be put on the card.
8. Tees
Play shall be from the blue tees at all
times. Players over 60 years of age shall be entitled
to hit from the white tees if they desire.
