This is a "sneaky-tough" hole.  Ranked second in difficulty according to scoring averages, the hole presents three distinct challenges.

First, the drive comes from a shaded tee area down steeply through a fairly tight set of trees.  An especially high number seem to leak right, leading to a search among the trees which separate 7 and 8.  The drive must carry 240 yards to reach the fairway.

From many spots, the approach must deal with trees, which jut out from the left side.  A large evergreen sits just left of the green, a sort of mirror image of the evergreen on 16, the hole just to the left.

But the fun really starts on the green.  No putt should ever be conceded here.  Downhill putts from nearly any spot can easily roll six feet by, and sometimes roll off the green.  An approach that goes over leaves a chip almost impossible to stop.  The Concord Cup has seen more four putts here than anywhere, and players will tiptoe happily up to the ninth tee if they escape with a two-putt.

2001: Eight played very tough again.  Above, from the 8th tee on Sunday, Tom Bres hit to the twelfth rough.  He eventually re-teed and halved the hole with Mark Williams with a seven.   On Saturday, Dennis Hackett hit from the 8th tee to the 16th tee.   Nobody parred the hole in the singles matches, but on Saturday, the entire foursome of Bob Ligon, Tim Seelig, Frank George and Mike Lamarra made four.
